People brave heat and COVID to save lives through blood drive
On March 28, 2021, JCI Vizag Steel City and Sri Satya Sai Mandir Samiti carried out a blood drive at Sri Satya Sai Mandi, Ukkunagaram. The four-hour event attracted over 200 participants who braved the scorching heat to donate blood.

JCI Vizag Steel City holds blood donation camps every year as part of the Sustainable Development Goal #3, Good Health and Wellbeing. Everyone needs blood every two seconds, from newborn infants to the aged, and one out of every seven patients admitted to hospitals requires a blood transfusion. The COVID condition has made it much more difficult for blood banks in Visakhapatnam and across India to fulfil the demand, but members of the JCI and Satya Sai Seva Samiti were out in force, eagerly registering to donate blood. For two days, they ran an awareness campaign on RINL’s Plant Plaza Road.

Doctors from NTR Blood Bank and Life Share Blood Bank talked to the guests about the value of blood donation and dispelled widespread stereotypes about blood donation during a COVID emergency. Despite the heat level hitting over 37 degrees, they collected 108 pints of blood. We will save many lives in the coming days with these 108 pints of blood. This blood drive is just one of the many ways JCI brings awareness and action to Sustainable Development Goals.
“I’m amazed and delighted to see such a massive turnout even on this hot day,” said Dr Prakash, HOD of Vizag Steel General Hospital, congratulating the volunteers and JCI.
