The United Nations General Assembly at its 75th session in March 2021 declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023)
Prime Minister at the inaugural ceremony of the International Year of Millets (IYM) 2023 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nation at Roam, announced that India will steer the celebration of International Millet Year 2023 and organize campaigns to promote the cultivation and consumption of Nutri-Cereals.
Taking this inspiration, on National Dietetic Day, JCI Vizag Steel City under the leadership of the incoming 9th President Jc Leela Rani, launched its first project called “Miracle with Millets” for the year 2023. Under the project, the LO will be conducting regular awareness and inclusive programs on Millets throughout the year.
On its first day, the LO conducted an awareness session on millets and conducted a cooking with millets competition at Lee Pharma Ltd and Divine Kids Playschool, Visakhapatnam.
“Millets are good for the consumer, cultivator, and climate. Millets are nutritious and can be cultivated in semi-arid zones besides consuming less water for irrigation”- said LO President-Elect. JC Leela Rani.
The chief guest at Lee Pharma Ltd. Mrs. Jaya Lakshmi founder of Early Childhood Care & Education said – Millets are smart food and if they substitute rice in typical meals, they may improve growth in children and adolescents by 26 - 39% and helps to overcome malnutrition as well.
The Chief Guest at Divine playschool, JFP Roopa Saripuri, ZVP Region D, Zone IV JCI India, said, "Millets are a basket of a wide range of nutrients, and one should switch over to Millets from Rice."
Explaining the nutritional value of the millets to the young children in the community Nutritionist T Lavanya said- finger millet naturally contains high calcium levels, and it can provide around 100 mg of bioavailable calcium/100g of grain, which could help overcome calcium deficiencies if consumed adequately.
On its first day, the event was a huge hit with the public and raised a lot of awareness. The event was sponsored by Lee Pharma Ltd.
